IoT ConnectLab

Connect real hardware to the internet. Learners program Wi-Fi-enabled ESP32 boards, read real sensors, control devices from a smartphone, stream data to cloud dashboards, and finally build industrial-style IoT systems using MQTT, Node-RED and ThingsBoard.

Course Curriculum & Learning Progression

The IoT ConnectLab curriculum at Axilearn is hands-on, project-based learning aligned with NEP 2020. Learners build every project on real ESP32 hardware, and each level builds on the one before:

  • Level 1: IoT fundamentals and smartphone dashboards
  • Level 2: accurate sensing, REST APIs, data logging and custom web dashboards
  • Level 3: industrial IoT architecture with MQTT, edge buffering, secure cloud platforms and OTA updates, ending in an engineering capstone

Structured Level Breakdown

Level 1 SESSIONS WITH INSTRUCTOR

Wi-Fi Wizards 📡

Beginner · 8 Weeks (~24 hours) · Ages 12+

Understanding how IoT works from sensor to cloud to app, getting started with the ESP32, connecting to Wi-Fi, and controlling devices and reading sensors from a smartphone dashboard.

Prerequisites: None (Arduino SimLab Level 1 recommended)
Hardware & Tools: ESP32 DevKit, LDR, DHT11, 5V Relay, Arduino IDE 2, Blynk IoT / Arduino Cloud

Topics Covered:

  • What is IoT? The four layers (device → connectivity → cloud → app), plus smart-home, agriculture and smart-city examples
  • Meet the ESP32: GPIO, ADC, PWM, 3.3V logic, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and setting up drivers and the IDE
  • Programming Refresher: digital and analog I/O, variables, conditions and the Serial Monitor
  • Networking Basics: IP addresses, routers, SSIDs, and station vs access-point mode
  • Your First Web Server: controlling an LED from a phone browser over the local network
  • Reading Sensors: DHT11 temperature and humidity, LDR light levels, and buttons
  • Controlling Outputs: relays (low-voltage loads only), buzzers and LEDs
  • Cloud Dashboards: devices, datastreams and variables, widgets, and the mobile app on Blynk IoT or Arduino Cloud
  • Alerts & Notifications: threshold-based push notifications
  • Safe IoT: strong Wi-Fi passwords, keeping device tokens private, and electrical safety (no mains wiring)
Mini Projects: Wi-Fi LED Switch · Room Weather Station · Smart Night Lamp · Phone-Controlled Doorbell · High-Temperature Alert
Level 1 Project Output: Smart Room Monitor. An ESP32 streams temperature, humidity and light levels to a phone dashboard, switches a fan or lamp through a relay (low-voltage demo), and sends alerts when limits are crossed.
Level 2 SESSIONS WITH INSTRUCTOR

Cloud Crafters ☁️

Intermediate · 10 Weeks (~30 hours) · Ages 14+

Advanced ESP32 programming with accurate sensors, I2C displays, JSON, HTTP REST APIs, cloud data logging, automation logic and your own responsive web dashboards.

Prerequisites: Wi-Fi Wizards, or basic ESP32 programming
Hardware & Tools: DHT22, MQ-135, BMP280, OLED, Pump, ThingSpeak, Telegram Bot API

Topics Covered:

  • Accurate Sensing: DHT22, soil moisture calibration, BMP280 pressure, and MQ-135 warm-up and limitations
  • I2C Displays: showing live readings on an OLED screen
  • Data Formats: creating and reading JSON with ArduinoJson
  • HTTP & REST APIs: GET and POST requests, status codes, and fetching live weather data from an API
  • Cloud Data Logging: ThingSpeak channels, charts and CSV export
  • Custom Web Dashboards: an ESP32 web server with HTML, CSS and JavaScript, auto-refresh and a mobile-friendly layout
  • Automation Logic: thresholds, hysteresis, and schedules using NTP internet time
  • Smart Provisioning: using WiFiManager so Wi-Fi passwords aren't hard-coded
  • Reliability & Power: Wi-Fi auto-reconnect, deep sleep for battery projects, and watchdog timers
  • Alerts & Integrations: Telegram bot notifications and webhooks
Mini Projects: Air Quality Meter with OLED · Live Weather Display (API) · Telegram Alert Bot · Cloud Data Logger · Plant Health Web Page
Level 2 Project Output: Smart Agriculture System. It monitors soil moisture, temperature and humidity, runs a pump automatically, logs data to the cloud, shows everything on a custom web dashboard, and sends Telegram alerts.
Level 3 SESSIONS WITH INSTRUCTOR

Industrial IoT Architects 🏭

Advanced · 12 Weeks (~36 hours) · Ages 16+ / ITI / Diploma

Industry 4.0 architectures: MQTT publish/subscribe, Node-RED, ThingsBoard, secure cloud connectivity, edge buffering, device-to-device networks, OTA updates and a multi-node engineering capstone.

Prerequisites: Cloud Crafters
Hardware & Tools: Multi-ESP32, MPU6050, SCT-013, RS485, MQTT, Node-RED, ThingsBoard

Topics Covered:

  • IIoT Architecture: device, edge, gateway and cloud layers, with use cases such as predictive maintenance, energy monitoring and asset tracking
  • MQTT in Depth: brokers, topics, QoS levels, retained messages and Last Will; running your own Mosquitto broker
